Three taxa, Neophylax sp, a scraper; Seratella sp., a gatherer; and Diplectrona modesta, a
filterer, increased significantly in the mixed substrate habitat of the treatment stream relative to the reference stream (Table 8).
The heart of the Tapestry server is the
Filterer, which executes users' filter queries.
Whereas
filterers and Chironomidae numerically dominated in both treatments, in terms of biomass the relative importance of collector + scrapers, predators and shredders increased in relation to Chironomidae (Figure 5).
Accordingly, families and specimens were categorized into eight distinct groups for each studied environment: predators grouped 34 families, collectors 17, shredders-herbivores ten, scrapers eight, collectors-filterers three, piercers-herbivores three,
filterers two and shredders-detritivores two (Appendix 3).
Mycelx
filterers were developed specifically for removing oil waste from water streams; the filtration unit supplied to Torbay Hospital was designed to remove oil bund water, which contains silts as well as oil residues.
Also, since atyid and Xiphocaris shrimps collectively represent "gatherers" and "
filterers" (sensu Cummins and Klug 1979), their activities can potentially affect the quality and quantity of FPOM in both the benthic depositional environment and suspended seston.
Because the kidneys and liver are the principal outlets and
filterers of poisons, their integrity must be fiercely protected.
The complexity of functional feeding groups (e.g., gatherers,
filterers, scrapers, predators) can be a measure of the functional integrity of BMI communities and a reflection of its capacity to cycle nutrients (Wallace and Webster 1996).
