Trend

The direction and momentum of a market, price, economy, or other measure. For example, if the price of a security is going mainly downward with only a few gains here and there, it is said to be on a downward trend. Identifying and predicting trends is important to finding the right moment to buy and sell securities. Trends are especially important in technical analysis, which recommends buying at the bottom of a downward trend and selling at the top of an upward trend.

trend

The relatively constant movement of a variable throughout a period of time. The period may be short-term or long-term, depending upon whether the trend itself is short-term or long-term. For example, a rising market is taken to mean that prices of most stocks are in an upward trend.

1. the direction of movement of a variable such as sales over time. See SALES FORECASTING.
2. a broad change in attitude and behaviour in society over time. These can serve to influence the acceptability of products by consumers with some products going out of fashion whilst others become more popular.
