An organization established to attempt to create a
cartel for countries
exporting bananas to North America, especially the United States. Most members were located in Central and South America. The organization proposed that member states enact a tax on banana exports to improve government
revenues from banana trade. The organization was formed in 1974; the following year, it was revealed that the chairman of United Brands had
bribed the president of Honduras to lower the tax. Since then, the Union has been less active. See also: Bananagate.
