activity sampling

or

work sampling

a means of studying the work of managers, staff and indirect factory workers (see INDIRECT LABOUR). Activity sampling involves noting at predetermined time intervals, say every five minutes, what activity or work a particular individual or group of employees is engaged in. From these observations it is then possible to calculate the percentage of their time which the individual or group of workers is spending upon various tasks. Activity sampling information can be used to assess the proportions of productive and non-productive time and to help managers and workers to use their time more efficiently See METHOD STUDY.
