In conclusion, we have demonstrated that Xenopus oocytes efficiently translate Limulus retinal mRNA and provide a suitable system for studying the characteristics of light
transduction. We will combine this technology with molecular biological techniques to study how the properties of Limulus rhodopsin influence photoreceptor sensitivity and noise.
(1999) suggested that the increase in intracellular [Ca.sup.2+] is related to the sensitivity of human cells to [As.sub.2][O.sub.3] exposure, indicating that a critical intracellular [Ca.sup.2+] signal
transduction pathway could be involved in [As.sub.2][O.sub.3]-mediated cell death.

This volume of the proceedings of the academy's meeting "Cell Signaling World: Signal
Transduction Pathways as Therapeutic Targets" held January 2006 in Luxembourg addresses current research on the role of cell signalling in cancer, a range of other diseases and prevention.
The team has used the program to determine the effect of the carcinogen tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin on 11 genes in lung epithelial cells and the genes' subsequent effect on the retinoic acid signal
transduction pathway.

The molecular program begins with the induction of genes that regulate transcription and signal
transduction. It continues with the regulation of genes involved in protein biosynthesis, cell proliferation, and epithelial cell differentiation.
In preferred embodiments, the stimulation of biological activities within cells results from inducing one or more activities including, but not limited to, gene expression, cell growth, cell differentiation, signal
transduction, membrane permeability, cell division, contraction, and cell signaling.
