single union deal

single union deal

an agreement between an employer and a TRADE UNION in which the former agrees to recognize the one union in respect of employee representation and COLLECTIVE BARGAINING. In return the union may agree to prohibit strike action by its members (see NO-STRIKE AGREEMENT). Such agreements are not new but they have been the subject of contention recently (especially in relation to Japanese and other foreign companies establishing factories in the UK), because signing such agreements has sometimes resulted in certain trade unions moving outside their traditional sphere of influence to represent occupational groups normally represented by another union.
