self-sufficiencythe extent to which an individual (or household) restricts his consumption to products produced by himself. Developing countries with a large agricultural sector show a higher degree of self-sufficiency than industrial countries where SPECIALIZATION of labour is the norm. See NONMARKETED ECONOMIC ACTIVITY.
