Scale order

Order to buy (sell) a security that specifies the total amount to be bought (sold) and the amount to be bought (sold) at successively decreasing (increasing) price intervals; often placed in order to average the price.

Scale Order

1. An order to buy a security where the client requests the order be executed at several, different times at successively lower prices. For example, a scale order may be an order to buy on three different occasions when the prices are $11, $10 and $9.

2. An order to sell a security where the client requests the order be executed at several, different times at successively higher prices. For example, a scale order may be an order to sell on three different occasions when the prices are $9, $10 and $11.

A specialized brokerage order that requests multiple executions at varying prices for the same security; for example, when an investor who wishes to liquidate a security position in a rising market spaces orders to sell specified numbers of shares at half-point price intervals.
