Apparently they hand over a one cedi note for each pile of
pesewas, giving the woman a ten per cent commission, and they need the change when they fill a cab with four passengers going in the same direction, each paying a fraction of the regular fare.
34 The currency unit in Ghana is the cedi, with one cedi divided into 100
pesewas, although inflation has made these obsolete.
The current cedi comes in 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 denominations (in notes) and 500, 200 and 100 in coins (called
pesewas).
Though I stand to be corrected, I can bet my last
pesewas on the fact that majority of these black market forex bureau operators do not have residential and work permits to engage in the business they are doing.
Though connoisseurs are arguing that the currency will likely hit the threshold of GHS6 and some
pesewas in the coming months, Dr Addison thinks otherwise, saying those predictions are often not realised, therefore, it is difficult to rely on them.
The cedi is currently being exchanged for the dollar at GHS5.20
pesewas, whilst the Pound Sterling is going for GHS6.88.
