Similarly, the future regulation should maintain, in the case of compensation for processed products, the possibility to use fish caught by EU vessels when catches by local fleets are insufficient to supply their processing industry, since this results in economic activity and employment in the
outermost regions.
The
outermost regions hope that the conclusions of the next European Council, in December 2008, will reserve a specific reference for them.
During the meeting, the delegates raised traditional topics dear to the EU's
outermost regions such as surcharges linked to geographical remoteness and isolation, scope for cooperation with neighbouring countries through new European Structural Fund regulations, the consequences of fisheries policy reforms (and more generally reform of common market organisations), as well as problems regarding immigration and state aid.
The European Commission plans to change existing EU guidelines on state aid for the maritime transport sector in order to allow the authorisation of aid for the start-up of routes between the EU's
outermost regions(1).
