offer for sale

a method of raising new SHARE CAPITAL by issuing company shares to the general public at a prearranged fixed price or by tender.

A company usually makes an offer for sale by placing its PROSPECTUS and application form for shares in a newspaper to invite the public to subscribe for shares. The application details will specify the deadline by which all application forms and accompanying cheques from prospective buyers must be received. At the deadline date, lists will be closed and shares allocated among successful subscribers (see ALLOTMENT); monies will be returned to unsuccessful applicants. See SHARE ISSUE, OVERSUBSCRIPTION.
