Ministry of Finance

A cabinet-level department of the Japanese government responsible for the national budget, the printing of currency, foreign exchange policy, and other areas. Before the 1990s, it was also responsible for banking regulation and monetary policy. It was regarded as the most powerful Japanese ministry for most of the postwar period. It traces its origins to the 6th century.
