Em

A unit of length used in printing. An em is one-sixth of an inch. It is also called a pica.

The longest dash is the "em dash," which should be used in place of a typewriter's "--." For example, "Don't believe him - ever." To type the em dash, you hold down both the Shift and Option keys and type a hyphen.
In recent versions of Microsoft Word, you can hit a combination of three keys to get a real dash (an em dash).
The lines are short, the fragments set off typographically by spare but stubborn horizontal lines; in the text itself the em dash plays a crucial role as transition or punctum at stanza's end.
