do-it-yourself store

Do-It-Yourself store

a RETAILER which sells mainly home improvement and repair equipment and materials (paint, wallpaper, patio doors, etc.) and garden accessories. DIY stores may be under single-shop ownership or run as a multiple CHAIN STORE business.

They compete principally by offering customers both convenience, by stocking an extensive range of products under the one roof, and competitive prices. The bigger DIY chains are able to obtain significant price discounts by BULK BUYING manufacturers' brands and have found it advantageous also to establish their OWN-LABEL BRANDS. See DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL, SELF-SERVICE.
