Measurements of the soil mechanical resistance are relatively easy to obtain, nondestructive, and can be taken more quickly than bulk density sampling. All this allows for a great number of measurements per plot, which is an advantage on forest soils.
We believe the TIN approach used in this study satisfies these requirements, and, additionally, allows for varying levels of resolutions, with finer resolution in high density sampling areas.
Impacts of skidder trafficking were quantified in 3 ways: (1) removal of cores for bulk density sampling at 3 depths to 25 cm: (2) penetrometer readings of the soil surface; (3) infiltration measurements during rainfall simulation.
