John Gearhart, MD, PhD, of John Hopkins University in Baltimore and James Thompson, a University of Wisconsin developmental biologist brought medical research to the forefront of a new frontier by identifying the factors involved in the cellular decision-making process that results in
cell specialization.
The core curriculum covers cells, genetics and metabolism; students learn about plant and animal cells,
cell specialization, heredity, chromosomes, gene functions, photosynthesis and cell respiration.
Loomis of the University of California, San Diego, used antisense genes in a slime mold to investigate
cell specialization and movement.
