base and meridian

On May 7, 1785, Congress adopted the rectangular system of surveying properties, now called the public land survey system. It is based on a rectangular system of imaginary lines running across the country. The baselines run east and west, and the meridian lines run north and south. Properties are described by reference to the principal meridian and the baseline that controls that area.
