The 2010 committee recognized that there may be some patients who are poor asbestos body formers who would not meet the criteria of 2 asbestos bodies per square centimeter and that such cases could still qualify as asbestosis if the lung fiber burden exceeded the 5th percentile for the asbestosis range.
Based on their fibrosis score, 7 of 82 (9%) DPF cases fell within the 95% prediction interval of asbestosis based on asbestos body counts by light microscopy (Figure 1).
The filters were then cut in half, with one half mounted on a glass slide for asbestos body quantification by light microscopy, and the other on a carbon disc with colloidal graphite, sputter-coated with gold, and examined by SEM and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA).
