condition-based maintenance

a PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE system in which a firm's plant, machinery or equipment is inspected at frequent intervals to assess maintenance needs. With this type of system the condition of components is monitored and they are replaced when they reach a certain state in order to avoid breakdowns. See INSPECTION.
