Russell 3000 Index

An index, weighted for market capitalization, of the 3,000 largest publicly-traded companies in the United States. While not as famous as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the S&P 500, some analysts believe that the Russell 3000 Index accomplishes much the same thing: providing a snapshot of how well the U.S. economy is performing by gauging demand for shares in its largest publicly-traded companies. Russell 3000 Index.

The Russell 3000 Index, a market capitalization weighted index published by the Frank Russell Company, tracks the 3,000 largest companies in the United States. Its subsets, the Russell 1000 and the Russell 2000, are widely used benchmarks of the US large-cap and small-cap markets.
