In Weimar Germany, an official appointed to help control the rapid
depreciation of the
German mark. The devisenkommisar office was created in September 1923 to help tame the
hyperinflation experienced in Germany at this time. The office soon take on the right to seize
gold, other
precious metals, and
hard currencies. These attempts to curb inflation failed.
