Area Code
Area Code
A three-digit code affixed at the beginning of a telephone number in a geographic region. Sometimes, if a place has an exceptionally large number of phone numbers, a single region can have more than one area code. Area codes were introduced in 1951 to allow for direct long-distance dialing.
