Fermi's Large Area Telescope (LAT) showed that eleven globular clusters emit gamma rays, the cumulative emission of dozens of
millisecond pulsars too faint for even Fermi to detect individually.
Now they are about one tenth of a
millisecond longer than usual and soon will return to normal, he said.
Simply put, an on-line UPS then provides all the features of a power conditioner - correctly defined - and in addition provides battery back-up in the event of an interruption of power, no matter whether that interruption is in
milliseconds or several minutes in duration.
The new hypothesis makes several testable predictions about this recently discovered subclass of
millisecond pulsars.
"We currently have about 20
millisecond pulsars, but only five of these can be timed to the needed precision," he notes.
Nice (now at Bryn Mawr College) reports a
millisecond pulsar with 2.1 [+ or -] 0.2 solar masses, which makes it the heaviest pulsar whose mass has been measured directly (most pulsars lie between 1.3 and 1.4 Suns).
They also have
millisecond response times and can operate during continuous or cyclical applications.
The phenomenon causes days to lengthen by a few
milliseconds over ten years, then shrink them back again.
