 Brandenburg GateThe Brandenburg Gate is the last surviving town gate of Berlin, Germany. When completed in 1791, the lavish gate greeted visitors to the boulevard that led directly to the Prussian palace. Architect Carl G. Langhans modeled the gate after the Propylea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens. On top was the "Quadriga of Victory," a statue of a chariot drawn by four horses.  Sputnik 1 Launch Begins the Space Race (1957)The first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, was launched by the USSR in 1957 and spurred the dormant US space program into action, leading to an international competition popularly known as the "space race."  Rutherford B. Hayes (1822)After fighting in the Union army in the American Civil War, Hayes served in the US House of Representatives and then as governor of Ohio.
