A 20th-century Chinese statesman. Active in the Communist Party of China throughout his entire career, he served as China's de facto leader from 1978 until 1992. He was the major force behind China's pro-market reforms, including the establishment of a private sector and the acceptance of international trade. His reforms are credited with turning China into a global economic player. Deng lived from 1904 to 1997.
