Mission Statement

A brief statement of what a company wishes to accomplish in the course of its operations. A mission statement may be placed in a business plan, on a website or nearly anywhere else. A mission statement is often one or two sentences and is the most concise possible statement of the company's goals. For example, Ford's mission statement in the early 1900s was simply, "Democratize the automobile." See also: Vision statement.

Mission statements are designed to give substance to the perceived purposes of the firm and to provide all employees with an indication of what they are attempting to achieve through their collective endeavours. For example, Glaxo Smith Kline's mission statement reads: ‘Glaxo is a research-based company whose people are committed to fighting disease by bringing innovative medicines and services to patients throughout the world and to the healthcare providers who serve them. I do not mean that we should get nothing in the here-and-now, but rather than in the long run it means nothing if what we do has no meaning in the continuum, if it does not contain elements of the past and seeds for the future.
I'm talking about common characteristics we share as human beings, some basic human needs: * the need to belong--after all, people are social beings; * the need for love and caring--to be liked by other people; * the desire to make a contribution--a meaningful contribution to the group or groups to which we belong; * the need for recognition--to have other people show their appreciation for our contributions; * the need for respect--to have others recognize and abide by our rights as human beings; * the desire for freedom--being able to act on our own, having responsibility, having some degree of control over what we do; * the need for intellectual and personal growth--the desire to learn new things; * and last but not least, the desire to enjoy our work.
