Western European Union
Also called the WEU. An international organization dedicated to mutual defense of member states. It was established in 1948 at the outset of the Cold War and was intended to counteract the Soviet bloc. The WEU's operations were gradually taken over by the European Union beginning the 1990s. The WEU treaty was abolished in 2010.
