For years, the diagnosis of syphilis has been carried out by means of a VDRL test
, which, despite being relatively simple and cheap, requires certain logistics for its execution.
While non-treponemal tests (NTTs), VDRL test
and RPR tests are used for screening, follow-up and treatment, treponemal tests are used to verify the diagnosis (7).
Women who had both a non-reactive VDRL test
and a non-reactive FAT-ABS assay were considered to be negative for syphilis.
Out of total 2488 participants, 9 (0.3617%) were found reactive on testing with VDRL test
. All these nine subjects were also found to be positive when tested with Treponema pallidum TPHA test.
During the VDRL test
, patient serum is mixed with the reagin antigen solution.
Exclusion criteria were cadaver with systemic sepsis, skin malignancy or skin diseases, and positive serology for anti-HIV, HBsAg, anti-HCV and VDRL test
. Three donors were excluded from the study--1 positive for HIV antibodies, 1 positive for HBsAg and 1 for HCV antibodies.
Of significance to the laboratorian, the VDRL test
requires daily preparation of an antigen suspension and use of reusable slides, whereas the RPR card test utilizes disposable plastic-coated cards.
The serologic tests for syphilis were positive; the VDRL test
was positive at 1:512, and the hemagglutination test was positive at 1:20,480.
It was subsequently discovered that the mother's VDRL test
had been positive at the time of delivery, with a titer of 1:256, and she had been treated with antibiotics at that time.
