OID

Original Issue Discount

The difference between a bond's face value and the amount for which it is sold by the issuer. Many bonds, especially those with low interest rates, are issued at a price less than par in order to entice buyers. Generally, the lower the interest rate, the greater the original issue discount, with zero-coupon bonds having the largest. Short of default, the original issue discount is a guaranteed profit for a bondholder, as bonds must be redeemed at face value. It is considered a form of interest and may be taxed as such.

For example, the line replacement units making up the radar installed in a fighter aircraft will all have barcode part-markings and UIDs composed from a combination of the radar manufacturer's enterprise identifier code together with part and/or serial number; but only the aircraft will be delivered with a value (acquisition cost) assigned to the aircraft's UID.
UID will be required if: (1) the cost of the acquisition is $5,000 or more; (2) the item is either serially managed, mission essential, a controlled inventory piece of equipment or a repairable item, or a consumable item where permanent identification is required; (3) it is a component of a delivered item, if the program manager has determined that UID is required; or (4) a UID or a DoD-recognized UID equivalent is available.
