psychological test

a test of an individual's level of achievement or aptitude. There are two main types of test:
  1. achievement test: this tests an individual's acquired knowledge and skills, for example a driving test;
  2. aptitude test: this tests fundamental abilities or aptitudes, such as mental ability (for example, an intelligence test) or perceptual abilities.

Whereas (a) is used to determine what skills an individual already possesses, the purpose of (b) is to discover his or her capacity to acquire new skills in future. Tests of both types are often utilized in RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION. Achievement tests can be used to verify information that a candidate has submitted in his application, and aptitude tests can be used to gauge how individuals will respond to new challenges and hence to provide a degree of prediction of future work performance. At the same time, this type of research is lacking in two notable regards: (1) Several personality measures, such as the Thematic Apperception Test, might be better conceptualized as observational tools than objective tests, (2) Issues of validity and reliability often are applied without a thoughtful understanding of the way these measures are constructed and yield meaningful data, and (3) Practitioners typically utilize multiple personality measures in an attempt to gauge overlapping signs and diagnostic symptoms rather than relying on single measures.
The possibility that Thematic Apperception Test will help to gain information that the client is unwilling to tell because that information is anxiety provoking and the client is unconscious of it because its been repressed into unconscious due to pain or guilt associated with it has generated great interest in investigating different areas such as social attitudes, delinquency abnormal personality, and variation in the use of language, Murstein (1962) studied the projection of hostility on T.A.T as a function of stimulus, background, and personality variables.
