Great Depressionthe DEPRESSION that was experienced by many countries in the decade 1929–39. The Great Depression was associated with very high UNEMPLOYMENT levels and low production and INVESTMENT levels in North America and Europe, and with falling levels of INTERNATIONAL TRADE.
