Technology transfer effects can be important in upgrading the technical competence of an industry, giving it an advantage over international competitors. Similarly, from a host country perspective, technology transfer enables the country to acquire technological expertise otherwise unavailable domestically, as a means of establishing new industries.

More generally, new technologies may be developed which are applicable, in modified forms, to a wide range of industries. For example, information technology and computer-aided manufacturing systems.
