For use at home, pumps are available that allow TPN administration, usually with the preparation which operate on an external dispensing line (part of a single-use dispensing cassette) which is in turn connected to the patient via a valve on a semi-permanent attached venous port.
Thus it is not clear whether a window period is needed between TPN administration and assessment of Ca, Mg or phosphorus in adult patients, but some period of time between 1 and 4 hours may be optimal.
