Shortfall

The amount by which an obligation or liability that is due exceeds one's ability to pay. For example, if a company has a $5,000 payroll for a given two week period, but only has $4,200 in its checking account, the company has a shortfall of $800. Obviously, shortfalls are causes of significant concern and can force an individual or company to borrow money to pay the obligation or liability. See also: Budget.
