shop stewarda shop-floor employee who represents his/her colleagues' interests in workplace negotiations with management. Their functions include rectifying with management GRIEVANCES arising at work and the maintenance or creation of patterns of WORK ORGANIZATION desired by their constituents. Although shop stewards are usually TRADE UNION members and are viewed as union representatives, they often function independently of the rest of the union. However, until CHECKOFF AGREEMENTS became widespread, it was common for shop stewards to collect union membership subscriptions.
