a multibranch retail business. All types of RETAILER, ranging from SPECIALIST SHOPS to SUPERMARKETS can be organized to take advantage of the growth and competitive opportunities deriving from large-scale operations. Unlike single-shop concerns, chain stores, by operating a network of stores each located strategically in catchment areas serving large populations, are in a position to expand their sales potential. Moreover, by selling the same general range of products in all of their stores and utilizing a central buying system, chain stores are able to secure BULK BUYING price discounts from manufacturers. In addition, the larger chain stores have found it advantageous to establish their ‘OWN LABEL BRANDS as a means of maximizing the group's sales potential. See DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL.
