the right of a parent to take time off work to care for a child. In the UK these rights have recently been enshrined in law following a European Directive on this issue. Such leave is unpaid and is restricted to employees who have at least one year's employment. See MATERNITY RIGHTS, PATERNITY RIGHTS.
