National Research and Education Network

Commonly called NREN. An Internet service provider for educational and research institutions. New protocols are often introduced on NRENs before they are used on other ISPs.

This article describes five programs that have been particularly significant to the evolution of biomedical communications over the last twenty years: the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM), Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems (IAIMS), the National Research and Education Network (NREN), the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), and the electronic journal.
NREN is envisioned as a high-capacity national research and education network combined with an information infrastructure of databases, services, and knowledge banks.
