Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade

A former name of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. It was created in 1983 with the merger of the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the Ministry of Foreign Economic Liaison, the State Import and Export Regulation Commission and the State Foreign Investment Regulation Commission. This merger was part of a broader effort to reform the Chinese economy after the radical failure of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.
