Leading Lipstick Indicator

Leading Lipstick Indicator

An indicator of future economic performance in which lipstick sales increase when consumers are not confident about the future. It is thought that people buy more lipstick when they are uncertain about the future because it is a relatively cheap luxury; that is, it is less expensive than a full makeover. The leading lipstick indicator has accurately predicted many market downturns in the past.
