Work Order

A formal, written request by a client for some product to be made and delivered to him/her. For example, a car company may submit a work order to an engine manufacturer for 10,000 engines to be made according to certain specifications. The term historically has been most common in manufacturing, but other sectors use it as well. It is also called a job order or, outside the United States, a works order.
