These problems could lead even the most ardent early adapter to conclude that
internationalized domain names are more trouble than they are worth.
The survey also found that UK and US consumers have trepidation concerning
Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), domains that use non-Roman characters (as in Russian, Chinese and Devanagari).
"When you add in the
internationalized domain names, we are creating a much broader internet that's available to people all over the world much more so than today.
The first Internet addresses containing non-Latin characters from start to finish will soon be online thanks to today's approval of the new
Internationalized Domain Name Fast Track Process by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) board."The coming introduction of non-Latin characters represents the biggest technical change to the Internet since it was created four decades ago," said ICANN chairman Peter Dengate Thrush.
China is among a handful of countries that has pushed hardest for official non-Latin suffixes and could be one of the first to make one available, said Tina Dam, the ICANN senior director for
internationalized domain names.
