The presence of
hooklets on a necrotic and degenerated background was considered as pathognomonic for diagnosis of HD (Figure 1).
Hooklet numbers from the 4 rows of the cephalic bulbs of AL3 Gnathostoma spp.
The purpose of reporting this case is that a successful diagnostic yield of scoleces and
hooklets can be obtained in FNAC of hydatid.
The scolex is seen in high magnification including the
hooklets (arrow).
5,8,10) The eggs are round to oval in shape, measure an average of 25-40 [micro]m in diameter, and contain an oncosphere with 6
hooklets.
The microbiology report indicated the presence of hydatid
hooklets.
The cysts removed during surgery were confirmed to be of hydatid cyst aetiology by histopathological evidence of germinal layer and by demonstration of scolices and
hooklets in the aspirated HCF.
Evaluation of the aspirated material revealed the presence of echinococcal
hooklets, yielding a final diagnosis of hydatid cyst (Figure 2).
Echinococcus is derived from the Greek echinos meaning hedgehog or sea urchin and kokkus meaning berry, which describes the numerous, spiny
hooklets seen in the berrylike scolex of the larva form of the parasite.
