Gemeinschaft

A German word translated roughly as community. It is used sometimes to describe an economy or society marked by strong personal relationships and moderate division of labor. For example, all members of a family may work together on a farm. While each family member may have his/her specialty, everyone can perform everyone else's job if need be. Feudal and idealistic socialist societies are examples of Gemeinschaft economies.
