Gap opening
In the context of general equities, opening price that is substantially higher or lower than the previous day's closing price, usually because of some extraordinarily positive or negative news.

Gap Opening
An opening price for a security on an exchange that is significantly higher or lower than the closing price on the previous trading day. A gap opening almost always occurs if there was positive or negative news (or a rumor) overnight or during the weekend.

The opening trade of a security in which the opening price shows a significant increase or decrease compared with that security's closing price of the previous day.
