Federal Savings and Loan Association

An institution chartered by the federal government whose primary function is to regulate institutions that collect savings deposits and provide mortgage loans.

Federal Savings and Loan Association

A federally chartered bank that specializes in taking deposits for checking and savings accounts, as well as making home mortgages. Savings and loan associations tend to be smaller than other banks and are more focused on the local communities in which they operate. It is sometimes (but not always) easier to obtain a loan from a savings and loan association because it may have better knowledge of the local market. They derive most of their funds from customer savings accounts, but they also generally have easy access to loans from the Federal Home Mortgage Banks. They are also known as thrifts. They are regulated by the Office of Thrift Supervision.

An interesting point is that the FSLC will also use the media to raise awareness of food safety issues in the general public, which could mean that restaurants will continue to be named and shamed if they violate the law.
Now in its second year, the organizers of the program--a partnership between FSLC and watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre--tapped Lisandro Alonso, an important player in New Argentine Cinema, for this year's residency even before the test's selection committee picked his latest, Viggo Mortensen starrer "Jauja," for its tightly curated Main Slate.

It's hard to think of a film org less "ghetto" than the tony FSLC, and moves like this highlight Kuo's sensitive balancing act: preserving traditions at one of the world's most august--some would say stodgy--film institutions, while opening it up to wider and younger audiences (and donors).
Joanne Koch, former FSLC topper and current board member, recalls that the FSLC "had a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts to screen films in the prisons," but was looking for a way to mount a film program in the winter.
