Dry Powder

Informal; a term for cash reserves, especially to cover unforeseen, future obligations. In personal finance, dry powder can also refer to low-risk liquid assets that can be converted to cash with minimal effort. The term is associated often with venture capital, when it refers to keeping ventures funded in a downturn, and with home building, when it refers to a reserve used to buy real estate when the market is favorable. The term derives from the need for dry gunpowder in the heat of battle in early modern warfare.
