In political science, the theory that the state ought to drive economic growth. Dirigisme argues that the state may do this by controlling the means of production (as in communism) or simply through careful economic planning. Proponents believe that dirigisme is an effective tool of development, while critics contend that it is inefficient and not respectful of individual rights. See also: State capitalism.
