A system that cannot be fully understood simply by understanding the function of each component part.

The use of words in describing complex systems led Zadeh to state his law of incompatibility: "As complexity rises, precise statements lose meaning and meaningful statements lose precision"--that is, as a system becomes more complex, one's ability to make precise statements or decisions about it decreases.
