Council of the European Union

the organization which arranges periodic meetings of ministers from the national governments of member states of the EUROPEAN UNION. Its role is to set political objectives for the European Union, coordinate national policies and resolve any differences between member states.

General information: The Council of the European Communities has adopted a Directive (Council Directive 76/260/EEC) for the harmonization of the legislations of the Member States in this field.
When transmitting its proposal to the Council of the European Communities, the EC Commission shall transmit copies thereof to the EFTA States.
The first Directive to regulate the professional activity of lawyers was the Council Directive 77/249/EEC aimed at facilitating the effective exercise of freedom to provide services by lawyers (Services Directive), explicitly defined the term "lawyer" and established the conditions for temporary provision of services in another EU Member State (The Council of the European Communities 1977).
